In March 1979, the dream of Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos to hear the berimbau with an orchestra was realized in the creation of this work, the Saudades.
This recording, made in March 1979, was a collaborative effort with Egberto Gismonti, who handled the arrangement for string instruments and contributed as a co-composer and supporting soloist. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Mladen Gutesha, was conducted for this project. Gutesha had previously collaborated on ECM projects with Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, and Terje Rypdal, such as the Trans-Idiomatic Project. "Saudades" stands out as a work ahead of its time, almost as if anticipating the world to catch up to its vision.
The reissue of this record features a gatefold design and includes new liner notes that shed light on its historical significance.
