Sumiko Yoseyama

Born in 1940 on Yaeyama Kohamajima. Debuted at the age of 16 and in 1957, performed with Bob Hope and the Les Brown Orchestra.

 

Until the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972, She had continuously performed with a full orchestra at clubs on U.S. military bases. In the year of reversion, she opened the jazz spot "Interlude". Alongside performances at the club, she increased her mainland performances and received praise from jazz critics and celebrities.

 

In 1983, her long-awaited first album, Introducing (Teichiku), was released and garnered considerable attention not only in Okinawa but also on the mainland. In 1984, she collaborated with world-renowned pianist Mal Waldron, formerly the pianist for Billie Holiday, on With Mal (Teichiku). In 1985, he released her third album, DUO (Toshiba EMI).

 

Then, on August 10, 2005, after a 20-year hiatus, she released a new work, Interlude (Tuff Beats). On December 8 of the same year, her past three works, Introducing, With Mal (Teichiku), and DUO (Tuff Beats), were reissued in paper jacket format. In March 2006, she appeared on the TBS program "Jonetsu Tairiku", one of the most famous documentary programs in Japan which features professionals or challengers who have so much passion (”Jonetsu” in Japanese), that would be recognized or called obsession. In 2007, she appeared in the film Longing directed by Yuji Nakae.

That same year, she also appeared in the film South Bounds directed by Yoshimitsu Morita, expanding his activities to the film industry. He continues to be actively involved in live performances nationwide, evolving as one of Japan's leading jazz vocalists.
