Profile:

MAREWREW is a female vocal group dedicated to reviving and passing on the traditional Ainu song "Upopo". Their performances faithfully recreate Ainu roots through various rhythm patterns and the natural trance-like sensation characteristic of round singing. After releasing their debut mini-album MAREWREW in 2010, their activities intensified. They collaborated with SPECIAL OTHERS on the album SPECIAL OTHERS, contributing the Ainu traditional song "Iyomante Upopo". They appeared on NHK's popular children's program "Nihongo de Asobo", performed at Peter Barakan's music festival "LIVE MAGIC!" in November 2015, and also gained attention for their performances at the world-renowned WOMAD festival in Europe, among other international events.

In August 2012, they released their highly anticipated full album Motto Ite, Hissori ne. This album, which condensed the charm of traditional Upopo while incorporating contemporary arrangements, received high praise from various quarters.

In April 2016, they released Cikapuni, a first mini-album featuring all newly recorded tracks and four additional bonus tracks. In the fall of 2016, they provided music for NHK's (E-Tele) program "Otona no Ikkyu-san", produced by Yoshihide Otomo.

The name "MAREWREW" means "butterfly" in Ainu.
