Born in Kitaojima, Taisho-ku, Osaka City, and raised in Henoko, Nago city of Okinawa. She spent some of her childhood on the mainland. Having a family who has a master of classical music, She began studying classical music and dance around the age of 20. Encouraged strongly by Tsuneo Fukuhara and Naohiko Uehara, apprenticed under Sadashige China, the father of Sadao China, and embarked on the path of folk songs. Debuted with the single Kataomoi in 1962, which became a massive hit, earning praise for his clear, high-pitched voice, often likened to the sound of silk threads.

Carrying only his sanshin, wandered through mainland areas such as Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Osaka for a long time before returning to Okinawa, where he formed a duo with the treasure of the folk song world, Rinsho Kadekaru. The duo left a legendary mark on numerous live performances and recordings. Even after Rinsho's passing, continued to be active tirelessly with CDs, performances overseas and domestically, movies, and television.

In 2007, released the album Uta Umui after about 10 years, attracting attention. In March 2012, collaborated with OKI, an Ainu tonkori player and producer, on the album Kita to Minami. In 2016, appeared in the movie Henkoro, directed by Takamine Tsuyoshi. In 2017, celebrated the 60th anniversary of his entertainment career, and on July 5th, released the new album Shima Omoi - Jyuban Shobu. Even beyond 80 years old, continues her diverse activities without pause.
