Delia Fischer / SAUDAÇÕES EGBERTO (CD) / UBCA-1053

[Description]

The album Brazilian Classics Revisited presents numerous masterpieces by Egberto Gismonti, reimagined through the resolute vocals and delicate piano of his beloved disciple Delia Fischer, accompanied by electronic soundscapes.

Delia Fischer, a female pianist, arranger, and singer, often hailed as Egberto Gismonti's disciple, has a career spanning over two decades. Despite her rich musicality, she has released relatively few albums as a leader. However, she remains a notable artist in Rio de Janeiro's music scene. This album pays homage to Gismonti, her most revered musician and mentor.

Featuring 13 iconic songs by Gismonti, including "Sonho" which was the debut song of Ellis Regina, "Loro", "Palhaco", "Baiao Malandro", "Frevo", "Agua e Vinho", and "Danca das Cabecas", Delia's versatile and exceptional talent shines throughout the record.

Accompanying the album is a set of liner notes by Kepper Kimura, an expert in Latin American music, providing insightful commentary and context to the music.

Delia Fischer, born in 1964, began her musical journey in the late 1980s, forming a duo named "Duo Phoenix" with keyboardist Claudio Daouelsberg. They released an album titled "Duo Phoenix" under Brazil RCA/BMG, marking Fischer's debut as a musician. This instrumental album prominently featured their keyboard talents, capitalizing on the rise of digital synthesizers, which garnered significant attention in Brazil and beyond.

During this era, renowned artists like Kitaro in Japan, Jean-Michel Jarre in France, and Vangelis in Greece were achieving great success, further amplifying the interest in albums utilizing digital synthesizers. Duo Phoenix capitalized on this trend, touring major cities in Brazil and even performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Europe before disbanding in 2000 after releasing one more album.

In the late 1990s, Fischer encountered the genius of Brazilian music, Egberto Gismonti. Despite already being familiar with Gismonti's music, Fischer embarked on a recording journey under his production. This collaboration led to her solo debut album, Antonio, released in 1999 on ECM, a prominent European contemporary jazz label.

Influenced by Gismonti, the album predominantly featured instrumental tracks composed by Fischer herself. Notable Brazilian musicians such as Nivaldo Ornelas and Nico Assumpção also contributed to the album. Gismonti's influence on Fischer's music was evident, and their friendship grew stronger over time, leading to Gismonti's participation in Fischer's subsequent albums.

In 2010, Fischer released her second album, Presente, under DUBAS, led by songwriter and producer Honaldo Bastos. This album showcased Fischer's original compositions and marked her debut as a vocalist. With guests like Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal, the album displayed a matured musicality and garnered acclaim for Fischer's exceptional vocal performances.

The momentum from "Presente" carried into the following year, leading to the release of Saudações Egberto, dedicated to Gismonti. Fischer's admiration for Gismonti's music, which she first encountered at the age of 15, inspired her musical journey and led to their enduring friendship and collaboration.

Reflecting on her musical influences, Fischer expressed gratitude for Gismonti's impact on her career, stating, "Thanks to Gismonti's music, which I listened to as a child, I aspired to become a professional musician, composer, and singer, aiming to be a truly free musician. I always have my own perspective and interpretation of things. It was a great happiness to be able to create this work based on my own thoughts, and I was delighted that Gismonti himself participated in it." Before recording, Fischer and Gismonti had numerous discussions, shaping the direction of the album.

This excerpt from the liner notes offers valuable insights into Fischer's musical evolution, her collaboration with Gismonti, and the profound influence he had on her artistic vision.
