The Miles Davis Quintet, renowned as one of the greatest small bands in jazz history, left an indelible mark in the mid-1950s at Cafe Bohemia on Barrow Street in Manhattan and at Prestige's studio run by Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. This album is the third installment of a four-LP series recorded during two marathon studio sessions, capturing the essence of their performances at Bohemia with music filled with high energy and responsiveness.
Following the acclaimed releases of "Cookin'" (OJCCD-128-2) and "Relaxin'" (OJCCD-190-2), this album "Workin'" features a blend of standards and originals, ranging from up-tempo beats to ballads, including the trio number "Ahmad's Blues". It encapsulates the dynamic presence of the emerging John Coltrane, the melodic swing of Red Garland's piano, the vibrant rhythm section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles Davis' exhilarating and intense trumpet playing.
